Unicorn

A Unicorn is a privately held startup with a valuation of $1 billion or more. The term was coined in 2013 when reaching that threshold felt genuinely rare — but there are now over 1,000 unicorns globally, which has diluted the prestige somewhat. The extended vocabulary is worth knowing: a Decacorn is valued at $10B or more, and a Hectocorn (sometimes called a Centacorn) at $100B or more. For founders, unicorn status matters because it signals to the market that your company has achieved a scale that attracts institutional investors, unlocks strategic partnerships, and makes talent acquisition easier. It is also worth noting that valuations are set at funding rounds and do not always reflect the current market — a company can be a unicorn on paper while struggling operationally.
